There are certain things that we say or do that sets a course irrevocably in motion. Often, we don’t consider the consequences of that key action before taking off down that path. However, once we trigger that action, we are immediately thrust on a vector of no return. In it’s simplest form, we say something that we can’t take back. It’s done. It’s out there. In a different form, we ask that question that clearly defines the current/future state of a relationship. Regardless of the current status of disillusion, the question in itself halts any chances of an alternate reality. The destination has been stamped with a one-way ticket.
A couple illustrations:
- One many dating couples are familiar with – “Where is this relationship going?”
- One many professionals have encountered – “I’ve been offered more money elsewhere. Can you give me a promotion?”
Once confronted with that type of scenario, the question forces the hand of the respondent. The desired option is not always the result.
If you are going to stamp a one-way ticket, be prepared for where it might take you.
